The companies involved include Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Oracle [2]. Reports from July 2026 indicate that this "hidden" debt is tied to the massive capital expenditures required to fuel the AI race [3]. Among these firms, Meta Platforms reportedly holds $420 billion [4] in these off-balance-sheet AI obligations.
Some analysts have compared these accounting practices to the historic Enron collapse, suggesting a lack of transparency. Ed Zitron said the situation "should be a shareholder riot" [5]. Others argue that the debt is not concealed in the same manner as Enron because it remains present in regulatory filings, even if it is not prominent.
Despite the differing views on the legality of the disclosures, the sheer volume of the debt has raised alarms. The trend reflects a broader industry gamble where companies prioritize rapid AI deployment over traditional debt transparency.
The reliance on these accounting mechanisms allows the firms to continue aggressive spending without immediately impacting their headline debt-to-equity ratios. However, the disconnect between the balance sheets and the footnotes creates a risk if the projected returns on AI investments fail to materialize.
