City officials confirmed the detection of the invasive emerald ash borer beetle within the city limits of Colorado Springs on Aug. 5 [1].

The arrival of the pest threatens the local urban canopy and public infrastructure. Because the beetle kills ash trees by destroying their vascular systems, its establishment in a major population center increases the risk of widespread tree loss across the region.

The emerald ash borer, known scientifically as Agrilus planipennis, is an invasive species that has been present in Colorado since 2013 [2]. While the beetle was previously found in other areas, its presence in Colorado Springs indicates a continued migration across the Front Range. Current data shows the pest has now been detected in more than 20 cities throughout the Front Range [3].

City Forester Matthew Puckett said the situation is limited but expects the infestation to grow. "Right now it's isolated, but it will move," Puckett said. "That pest is here to stay" [4].

The beetle spreads by flying from tree to tree or through the transport of infested firewood. Once established, the larvae feed on the inner bark of ash trees, disrupting the flow of water, and nutrients. This process typically leads to the death of the tree if not treated or removed.

Local authorities are monitoring the spread to determine the best course of action for tree preservation and removal. The city's focus remains on containment and public awareness to prevent further acceleration of the beetle's movement into residential neighborhoods.
