The I-70 Floyd Hill Project in Colorado has reached the halfway point of construction as crews transition from blasting to bridge work.
This milestone marks a critical shift in the $905 million [3] effort to modernize one of the most congested stretches of the highway in the Rocky Mountains. By completing the heavy excavation phase, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) can now move toward structural improvements designed to reduce traffic bottlenecks.
Construction crews have completed 211 blasts [1] to clear the rugged terrain. This process resulted in the removal of more than 765,511 tons [1] of material from the site. The scale of the excavation was necessary to prepare the mountain landscape for new infrastructure.
The project first began in 2023 [4] to address long-term safety and capacity issues. The current phase involves moving away from the disruptive blasting process and toward the assembly of bridges, and road surfaces. This transition is intended to streamline the flow of traffic through the Floyd Hill area.
CDOT officials said the project remains a primary focus for improving mountain-highway accessibility. The extensive removal of rock and debris has paved the way for the final stages of the upgrade, which will ultimately transform the corridor for travelers and residents alike.
