The Indian government told the Rajya Sabha that studies show E20 petrol does not cause abnormal wear and tear or engine failures in vehicles [1, 2].
The statement addresses growing concerns from opposition parties and consumer groups regarding the nationwide rollout of 20% ethanol-blended fuel. As India shifts toward greener energy, the government must balance environmental goals with the mechanical longevity of millions of existing internal combustion engines.
Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport & Highways, said "E20 fuel does not cause abnormal wear and tear or major performance issues in vehicles" [1]. He said the fuel maintains a stable performance profile for the majority of the national fleet.
However, the government acknowledged that users may experience a modest reduction in fuel efficiency. According to parliamentary statements, a mileage drop of three% to five% is possible when using E20 fuel [3].
Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas Gopi said the transition to E20 petrol has been "phased, calibrated and evidence‑based" [4]. He said the ministry has not received any widespread or substantiated complaints linking E20 to engine failures [2].
While most modern vehicles are compatible, some older models may require maintenance. The government specified that BS3 cars manufactured before 2016 might need rubber part replacements during routine service to prevent degradation caused by the higher ethanol content [1].
These assurances come as the Centre continues to push for higher ethanol blending to reduce oil imports and lower carbon emissions. The government maintains that the shift is safe for the vast majority of vehicles on the road, provided that older models receive the necessary component updates [1, 2].
“"E20 fuel does not cause abnormal wear and tear or major performance issues in vehicles."”
India's commitment to E20 fuel is a strategic move to reduce dependency on foreign oil and meet climate goals. By acknowledging a slight dip in mileage and specific needs for pre-2016 BS3 vehicles, the government is attempting to manage consumer expectations and preempt legal or political challenges from the automotive sector and vehicle owners.
