Mining billionaire Gina Rinehart announced a plan to involve Elon Musk and SpaceX in building a domestic Australian space industry during the 2026 Bush Summit [1].
The proposal seeks to transform Australia into a hub for aerospace manufacturing and extraterrestrial resource extraction. By leveraging the country's vast open land, Rinehart aims to establish local rocket construction and technology development to secure a competitive edge in the emerging space economy.
Rowan Dean, speaking on Sky News Australia, said Rinehart’s vision focuses on the geography of the continent. "Gina Rinehart was talking about trying to get Elon Musk involved. We’ve got all this land, we’ve got all this space, the one thing Australia has is great open areas of land," Dean said. He said the goal is to get Musk building rockets and establishing a space industry within the country.
To support this strategic pivot, Rinehart's company, Hancock Prospecting, has taken a significant financial position in the U.S.-based aerospace company. Reports on the investment vary, with some sources stating the stake is valued at $1 billion [2], while others place the figure at $1.4 billion [3].
This investment aligns with Rinehart's interest in mining beyond Earth. The billionaire believes that the capabilities of SpaceX could be integrated with Australian mining expertise to develop the infrastructure necessary for lunar or asteroid resource recovery.
Dean said that the country requires bold initiatives to drive economic growth. "I was impressed by some of the ideas that came from Gina Rinehart … we need ideas to generate Australia," Dean said.
The plan emphasizes the use of Australia's interior for launch facilities and testing sites, capabilities that would reduce reliance on foreign launch pads and foster a high-tech workforce locally.
“Let’s get Elon Musk building rockets here, let’s get a space industry here”
This move represents a strategic attempt to diversify Australia's economy by linking its traditional mining dominance with the burgeoning commercial space sector. By securing a multi-billion dollar stake in SpaceX, Rinehart is positioning her business to pivot from terrestrial extraction to space-based resources, potentially shifting the geopolitical center of aerospace manufacturing toward the Southern Hemisphere.
