Brazilian biologists discovered that the zombie-ant fungus Ophiocordyceps lives inside forest mosses far from infected ants [1, 2].

This discovery reveals a previously unknown stage in the fungus's life cycle. Understanding this hidden phase allows scientists to better comprehend how the parasite interacts with the broader Amazonian ecosystem beyond its known relationship with insects [3, 4].

The study was led by researchers at the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA) in Manaus [1, 2]. The team conducted their fieldwork in the Adolfo Ducke Forest Reserve near Manaus, Brazil [1, 2].

Ophiocordyceps is widely known for its ability to manipulate ants, forcing them to bite into plants before they die to facilitate fungal growth. However, the researchers found the fungus living inside mosses located more than 10 meters [5] away from the infected ants.

This finding suggests the fungus may utilize mosses as a secondary host or a reservoir. Such a strategy could ensure the survival of the species when ant populations are low or environmental conditions are unfavorable, creating a biological safety net for the parasite.

The research team aimed to uncover the complexities of the fungus's ecological interactions with plants and insects [3, 4]. By identifying this hidden stage, the biologists have expanded the known biological footprint of the Ophiocordyceps species in the rainforest.
