The Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority is increasing registration fees for students taking the HKDSE in mainland China to HK$8,000 [1].
This sharp price hike marks a significant shift in the accessibility of the university entrance exam for candidates based in mainland China. As the cost of entry rises, the financial barrier for students seeking a path to Hong Kong universities increases substantially.
The new fee represents a 220% increase [1] from the previous cost of HK$2,500 [1]. This change follows the conclusion of a three-year pilot scheme for mainland-based examination centers. The HKEAA said the adjustment is necessary to support the "sustainable and effective operation" of the exam programme [2].
The fee structure is not only changing for mainland candidates. Local students in Hong Kong will also see an increase in costs. The authority said local students will face a 4% increase [1] to sit for each subject, with charges now ranging from HK$540 to HK$808 [1].
The HKDSE is the primary gateway for students attempting to enter higher education institutions in Hong Kong. By establishing centers in mainland China, the authority previously expanded the reach of the exam to a broader demographic of students. However, the end of the pilot phase means the program must now move toward a self-sustaining financial model.
According to the HKEAA, the updated pricing will be effective for the 2026-27 HKDSE sitting [1]. This means students preparing for the exam in the coming year will be the first to encounter the HK$8,000 registration fee [1].
“Registration fee for mainland HKDSE candidates will rise to HK$8,000, a 220% increase.”
The transition from a subsidized pilot scheme to a full-cost recovery model suggests that the HKEAA is prioritizing the long-term financial viability of its mainland operations over subsidized growth. While local students face a marginal increase, the steep jump for mainland candidates may deter lower-income applicants, potentially altering the demographic makeup of the mainland-based candidate pool.
