The National Testing Agency and security authorities are conducting a nationwide mock drill on Saturday to prepare for the NEET-UG re-test.
This operation is critical to maintaining the integrity of the examination process. By testing operational preparedness and security protocols, authorities aim to minimize disruptions for the millions of students awaiting the high-stakes medical entrance exam.
The drill focuses on coordinating security personnel, verifying exam-day logistics, and testing the transparency of the process. To ensure a secure environment, more than 2.5 lakh personnel [1] have been deployed for the exercise. The scale of the drill reflects the complexity of managing one of the world's largest standardized tests.
Geographic coverage for the exercise is extensive. The mock drill is taking place across 551 cities within India [2] and in 14 cities abroad [2]. This wide reach is intended to ensure that every center is capable of adhering to strict security protocols before the actual exam date.
These preparations precede the official NEET-UG re-test scheduled for June 21, 2024 [3]. The agency is under significant pressure to ensure a smooth rollout, as approximately 22.79 lakh candidates [2] are expected to sit for the examination.
Security authorities said the drill is designed to test coordination among different agencies. The focus remains on preventing leaks and ensuring that the logistical chain, from the transport of question papers to the management of candidate entry, is airtight.
“The National Testing Agency deployed over 250,000 security personnel to verify logistics.”
The unprecedented scale of this mock drill indicates a high level of sensitivity surrounding the NEET-UG process. By treating the logistical setup as a security operation involving hundreds of thousands of personnel, the NTA is attempting to preempt potential irregularities and restore public confidence in the transparency of India's medical admissions system.
