Italy cancelled a planned visit to the U.S. by its foreign minister after Donald Trump said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni begged for a photo.
The dispute marks a sharp diplomatic rupture between two key allies. The tension escalated when Italy viewed the comments as a fabrication that disrespected its head of government.
The conflict stems from the G7 summit held June 13‑15, 2024 [1], in Borgo Egnazia, Puglia. Following the event, Trump said, "She begged me for a selfie" [2].
Prime Minister Meloni rejected the account. "It is completely made up," Meloni said [3].
In response to the remarks, Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani cancelled his scheduled trip to Washington, D.C. Tajani said, "We have decided to cancel the visit to the United States as a response to these unfounded statements" [4].
The cancellation serves as a formal protest against the narrative presented by Trump. Italian officials characterized the claim as a fabrication that undermines the dignity of the Prime Minister's office, a move that disrupts planned diplomatic engagements between Rome and Washington.
“"She begged me for a selfie."”
This incident highlights the volatility of personal diplomacy when official state relations are influenced by the public rhetoric of leaders. By cancelling a high-level ministerial visit, Italy is signaling that perceived personal slights against its leadership can outweigh routine diplomatic cooperation, potentially complicating bilateral security and economic ties.
