Former US Ambassador Ken Salazar Warns of Mexican Security Gaps

Former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar said the Mexican government's security strategy lacks clarity during a book presentation in Mexico City.

This critique comes as the two nations navigate a complex relationship regarding organized crime and national security. Salazar's assessment suggests that without clear rules and coordinated bilateral efforts, the fight against criminal networks remains hindered by uncertainty.

Salazar presented his book earlier this year ^[2]. In his analysis, he said the environment is marked by unsolved murders and direct threats against his own staff. He said these persistent dangers underscore the volatility of the region's security landscape.

Addressing high-profile law enforcement actions, Salazar discussed the capture of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada in July 2024 ^[1]. He said the arrest should be viewed as a binational victory for both the U.S. and Mexico. However, he said such captures are insufficient on their own to dismantle the broader infrastructure of organized crime.

Salazar's findings have not been universally accepted. Reports from El Financiero indicate that Mexican officials have accused the former ambassador of being a liar regarding the contents and claims of his book ^[2]. Despite the friction, Salazar said he maintains high expectations for President Claudia Sheinbaum. He said improving the coordination between the two governments is the only viable path to reducing violence, and increasing stability in the region.
