Romania has received its first five [1] Alstom Traxx Passenger electric locomotives to modernize its rail network.
This delivery represents a critical phase in the country's effort to replace aging rolling stock. By upgrading its fleet, Romania aims to improve the reliability and efficiency of its passenger rail services, reducing delays and operational costs associated with older machinery.
The locomotives were handed over to the state-owned passenger rail operator CFR Călători [1]. This process is being overseen by the Railway Reform Authority ARF, which manages the strategic modernization of the national rail infrastructure.
The acquisition of these specific Alstom Traxx Passenger models [1] is part of a broader railway fleet renewal program. This initiative seeks to integrate modern electric propulsion, and updated safety standards across the network to better serve the public.
According to reports, the arrival of these units is "marking the latest step in the country’s railway fleet renewal program" [1], Romania Insider said. The deployment of these electric locomotives is expected to reduce the carbon footprint of the national rail system by transitioning away from older, less efficient power sources.
The integration of the five [1] new units into the CFR Călători fleet will allow the operator to begin phasing out obsolete locomotives. This gradual rollout is designed to ensure that the transition to the Traxx platform does not disrupt existing schedules while crews are trained on the new technology.
