Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma participated in the 12th [1] International Day of Yoga celebrations in Guwahati today.
The event highlights India's ongoing efforts to integrate traditional wellness practices into public health strategies to address the challenges of an aging population.
The celebrations took place on June 21, 2026 [2], under the specific theme of “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” [3]. This focus aims to promote long-term health and general wellbeing through the practice of yoga. Both officials joined a dedicated yoga session to mark the occasion [3].
The scale of the event in Assam reached deep into rural areas. Organizers said the celebrations involved 23,498 villages [4] across the state. This widespread coordination ensured that the health initiative reached diverse demographics beyond the urban center of Guwahati.
A significant portion of the participation came from Self Help Group (SHG) members. Officials said they expected over 32 lakh [4] members to participate in the Yoga Day events across Assam. The mobilization of these groups reflects a strategy to use community networks to disseminate health and wellness practices.
Sitharaman and Sarma led the sessions as part of a national effort to standardize the observance of the international day. The 12th [1] edition of the event continues the trend of using high-profile political leadership to encourage citizen participation in wellness activities.
“The event was held under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” to promote health and wellbeing.”
The massive scale of participation in Assam, particularly the involvement of over 3.2 million SHG members, demonstrates the Indian government's use of grassroots organizational structures to implement public health initiatives. By focusing on 'Healthy Ageing,' the initiative signals a shift toward preventative healthcare for the elderly, aiming to reduce the long-term burden on the medical infrastructure through lifestyle interventions.
