Argentina's National Meteorological Service (SMN) issued an orange alert for intense storms, heavy rain, and strong wind gusts across much of the country.
The severe weather threatens critical infrastructure and public safety in densely populated areas, particularly within the Buenos Aires metropolitan region. A cold front generating cyclogenesis is driving the volatile conditions, which include strong electrical activity and possible hail.
The SMN alert covers a period of 72 hours [1], beginning the weekend of July 31, 2026. The warning extends to Buenos Aires city and the Greater Buenos Aires conurbano, including Paso del Rey and Moreno.
Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 90 km/h [2]. These conditions have already led to significant precipitation in several areas. In Paso del Rey, Moreno, approximately 40 mm of rain fell in a few hours [3]. Other reports indicate more severe accumulation, with more than 70 mm of rain falling in less than two hours across the AMBA region [4].
The SMN said the orange alert signifies a high level of risk, necessitating caution for residents in the affected provinces. The combination of heavy rainfall and high winds often leads to urban flooding, and power outages — risks that are currently elevated due to the cyclogenesis event.
Authorities continue to monitor the weather patterns as the cold front moves through the region. Residents are advised to follow emergency protocols and avoid unnecessary travel during the peak of the storm activity.
