The Karnataka Department of Tourism has begun consultations to explore the feasibility of launching cruise services from Mangaluru [1, 2].
This initiative represents a strategic effort to diversify the state's travel sector by tapping into the growing demand for luxury maritime travel. By establishing a cruise hub in Mangaluru, the government aims to increase economic activity and visibility for the region's coastal assets [1, 3].
To execute the study, the department has hired Waterways Leisure Tourism Ltd, a firm based in Mumbai [1, 2]. The company has agreed in principle to investigate the operational requirements and potential routes for cruise ships along the Karnataka coast [2, 3].
According to the secretary of the Department of Tourism, the move is part of a broader state strategy to promote maritime tourism. "As part of the Karnataka Government’s efforts to promote cruise tourism in the State, the Department of Tourism has initiated consultations with leading cruise operators," the secretary said [1].
Officials believe that the development of these services will not only attract international visitors but also boost domestic tourism. The consultations, which were announced July 31, 2026 [2], will focus on the infrastructure needed to support larger vessels, and the environmental impact of increased maritime traffic in the area [1, 3].
The collaboration with a Mumbai-based operator provides the state with access to existing expertise in the Indian cruise market. This partnership is intended to ensure that the proposed services are commercially viable before the state commits to significant infrastructure investments at the Mangaluru port [2, 3].
“The department has started consultations to explore the feasibility of launching cruise services from Mangaluru.”
The move to integrate Mangaluru into the cruise tourism circuit suggests a shift toward high-value tourism in Karnataka. By leveraging private sector expertise from Mumbai, the state is attempting to mitigate the financial risk of infrastructure development while positioning its coastline as a competitive destination against established cruise hubs in India.
