The extreme weather has compounded the hardships for residents still recovering from the Kumamoto earthquake. The combination of record heat and damaged infrastructure has created a public health risk for those performing heavy cleanup work and facing utility failures.
In Kumamoto City, the temperature reached 40.3 °C [1]. Other nearby areas also saw extreme peaks, with Ueki City recording 39.2 °C and Yatsushiro City reaching 39 °C [1]. One Kumamoto city resident said they felt as if they were melting and wanted to stay inside with the air conditioning.
The heat has coincided with significant utility disruptions. A water outage has affected 45,280 households across Yatsushiro, Ueki, and other surrounding areas [2]. This lack of running water increases the risk of dehydration and heatstroke for residents already struggling with the environment.
Cleanup efforts have also been slowed by the weather. Residents in Yatsushiro and Ueki faced long queues at waste disposal sites while transporting earthquake debris. One resident at a Yatsushiro waste collection site said they had to make four trips [1]. Another resident at the Ueki waste processing facility said they waited in line for about 1.5 hours [1], noting that the situation was unavoidable.
Local authorities continue to manage the waste disposal and water restoration processes as the region deals with the dual burden of natural disaster recovery and extreme summer temperatures.
