A severe heatwave has dried the Baeken reservoir in South Gyeongsang Province, leaving the basin floor cracked and empty.
The environmental crisis signals a dangerous escalation in regional climate volatility, threatening water security and public health during a record-breaking summer.
Government health agencies said on Tuesday that the extreme heat has led to 19 deaths [1]. The casualties coincide with a period of record-hottest temperatures that have pushed local infrastructure to its limits.
In Yangsan, officials recorded a maximum temperature of 40.3°C [2]. This peak occurred on July 29 [3], contributing to a broader pattern of drought across the region. The lack of precipitation and intense evaporation have depleted critical water sources, a trend visible in multiple locations.
Two reservoirs in Miryang have been pushed to near-zero capacity [4]. The Baeken reservoir is among the most striking examples of this depletion, where the water has completely vanished to reveal a dry, fissured bed.
Local authorities said they continue to monitor the impact of the heatwave as the region struggles to manage the water shortage. The combination of record-high temperatures and dwindling reservoir levels has created a precarious situation for both the agricultural sector and residential water supplies.
