The Nigerian government approved ₦46 billion [1] for the reconstruction and resurfacing of the second runway at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.
This investment marks a significant effort to modernize aviation infrastructure in Kano State, aiming to increase safety and operational capacity for one of the region's busiest hubs.
Umar Idris Shuaibu, a Kano APC stalwart, praised the ongoing reforms led by Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the Chairman of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). Shuaibu said the initiatives focus on infrastructure renewal, the integration of digital innovation, and the improvement of passenger services to meet international standards.
The reforms are part of a broader strategy to upgrade the facility's efficiency. Shuaibu said the current leadership is implementing "ongoing reforms under the leadership of the Chairman of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje."
Support for the project has extended to other high-ranking party members. Alhaji (Dr.) Iliyasu Musa Kwankwaso, an APC chieftain, expressed support for the funding. Kwankwaso said he wanted to "commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the Federal Government’s approval of ₦46 billion [1] for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport."
The project aims to address long-standing infrastructure gaps at the airport. By focusing on the second runway [2], the government intends to reduce congestion and allow for a higher volume of aircraft movements, both domestic and international, within the state.
Officials said the goals of the current FAAN leadership include enhancing the overall passenger experience through better digital tools and modernized facility management. These changes are intended to position the airport as a more competitive gateway for commerce and travel in Northern Nigeria.
