BYD plans to become the leader of the Brazilian automotive market by 2030 with a target of selling 600,000 vehicles per year [1].
This expansion represents a significant shift in the South American automotive landscape as the company integrates local manufacturing with aggressive sales targets. The strategy relies heavily on the development of the Camaçari plant in Bahia to sustain high-volume production.
Alexandre Baldy, senior vice president of BYD in Brazil, detailed these goals in an interview published May 13 [2]. He said the company is focusing on the intersection of industrial growth and public policy to ensure the viability of electric vehicles in the region.
Baldy said that electric cars are not common vehicles and require specific public policies to thrive. He said that the benefits granted for importing cars from China were negotiated with the government to make the automaker's investments possible [3].
Regarding the tension between different industry players and the state, Baldy addressed the importance of diplomatic relations. "Brigar com o governo nunca é bom," Baldy said [4], or "Fighting with the government is never good."
The company's roadmap involves leveraging the Camaçari facility to move beyond imports and establish a robust domestic footprint. By aligning with government incentives, BYD intends to scale its operations to meet the 600,000 annual unit goal [1].
Baldy said the company's presence in Brazil is designed to catalyze the transition to sustainable mobility through strategic partnerships, and infrastructure investment.
“"Queremos ser líder de mercado até 2030 e vender 600 mil carros por ano."”
BYD's strategy signals a transition from being an importer to a domestic industrial power in Brazil. By tying its growth to government policy and the Camaçari plant, the company is positioning itself to dominate the electric vehicle transition in Latin America, potentially displacing traditional combustion-engine manufacturers who lack similar state-backed import-to-local-production pipelines.
