Electric vehicles have the potential to increase earnings for freight drivers across India, Africa, and the Global South, according to a recent report.
This shift is critical because freight drivers in these regions often face volatile fuel costs and high operational overhead. If the transition to electric power is managed correctly, it could stabilize income for thousands of independent operators.
Drawing on a survey of more than 1,500 freight drivers across 11 Indian states [1], a report by Smart Freight Centre and the Shell Foundation said that electric vehicles can improve driver's earnings [1]. The findings suggest that the lower cost of electricity compared to diesel can significantly reduce daily expenditures for those transporting goods.
However, the report said that these benefits are not automatic. The financial viability of the transition depends on whether financing keeps pace with the needs of the drivers. Without accessible loans and affordable credit, the high upfront cost of electric trucks remains a barrier for the average operator.
Operational factors also play a role in the success of the transition. The report said that connectivity and the availability of charging infrastructure are key to ensuring drivers can maintain their schedules without significant downtime.
While the primary data comes from India, the report said the findings are applicable to Africa and other regions in the Global South. The common thread is the need for a supportive ecosystem that includes both financial tools, and physical infrastructure to ensure the economic gains reach the drivers themselves.

The transition to electric freight in emerging markets is as much a financial challenge as a technological one. While the operational costs of EVs are lower, the 'financing gap' prevents low-income drivers from accessing the technology. For the Global South to realize these economic gains, governments and private lenders must create specific credit instruments for green transport to prevent the technology from benefiting only large fleet owners.
