Russia launched a massive missile attack on Kyiv using a record number of ballistic missiles between April 15 and April 16, 2024 [1].

The escalation represents a shift in Russian strike tactics, aiming to overwhelm defenses with high-velocity weaponry. This change in strategy increases the risk to urban infrastructure and civilian populations in the capital.

Yuriy Ihnat, head of communications for the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said Russia changed its shelling tactics during the night. The strikes affected more than 50 locations across Kyiv [2]. Among the damaged sites was the Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra [1, 2].

The attack resulted in dozens of injuries [2]. Ihnat said the volume of ballistic munitions used in this specific window was unprecedented.

Ukrainian officials are now urging the public to maintain operational security regarding the aftermath of the strikes. Ihnat said citizens should not photograph or publish images of missile debris. According to Ihnat, the enemy uses such photos to create propaganda falsifications [2].

"Do not photograph and do not publish photos of the fragments of any missiles during Russian shelling, because the enemy uses this for falsifications," Ihnat said [2].

The strike occurred over a period spanning from the morning of April 15 to the morning of April 16, 2024 [1]. Ukrainian defense forces continue to monitor the tactical adjustments made by Russian forces to adapt their interception strategies.

Russia changed its shelling tactics and used a record number of ballistics.

The shift toward a record volume of ballistic missiles suggests an attempt by Russia to saturate Ukrainian air defense systems. By increasing the quantity of high-speed munitions, the attacking force seeks to find gaps in the defensive perimeter, resulting in higher casualty rates and damage to cultural landmarks like the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
