Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Ministry of the Environment established a joint task force on July 31 to combat the red-necked longhorn beetle [1].
The invasive beetle threatens Japan's agricultural economy and cultural heritage by destroying iconic trees, including cherry and peach varieties. Because the larvae eat the interior of the trees, the plants eventually die, creating a widespread ecological and economic risk.
Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Norikazu Suzuki and Minister of the Environment Ishihara are leading the task force [1, 2]. The beetle, which was first identified in Japan in 2012 [1], has seen its impact expand across the country. Damage has been confirmed in between 19 and 20 prefectures [1, 3], with significant activity centered in the Kanto and Kansai regions.
Recent sightings include the discovery of adult beetle carcasses in Higashikagawa City, Kagawa Prefecture, this July [4]. Other affected areas include Odawara in Kanagawa Prefecture [1, 3]. The life cycle of the insect is particularly destructive; adult beetles lay eggs in trees, and the subsequent larvae hollow out the wood from the inside [5].
"There are concerns that this will have a significant impact on our country's culture and agriculture, and I feel a great sense of crisis," Suzuki said [1].
The task force aims to coordinate a national response to prevent further spread and protect remaining orchards, and forests. The beetle is officially designated as a specified invasive alien species, which allows the government to implement stricter controls on its movement and management [1, 3].

The escalation to a multi-ministry task force signals that the red-necked longhorn beetle is no longer a localized pest but a national biosecurity threat.
