For several weeks, boats have remained tilted on the bottom of the waterway [3]. The drop in water levels has been so significant that some residents describe the change in elevation as extreme. Bas Mulders, a resident of the area, said, "Our shit is going up 30 meters" [1].
Mulders has lived on a houseboat in 't Meertje for 26 years [2]. He said he has experienced many periods of low water during his time there, but the current conditions are notably severe.
Residents are facing a precarious situation as their homes lean at precarious angles. Because the boats are no longer floating, they are subject to the contours of the riverbed, which can cause significant stress on the hulls of the vessels.
The drought has transformed the waterfront into a dry basin in several sections. This has not only affected the residents' ability to move their vessels, but has also disrupted the local ecosystem of the Nijmegen waterfront.
