A consortium led by Siemens Mobility has been awarded a contract worth EUR 308 million [1] to modernize railway signaling and interlocking systems in Romania.

This investment is critical for the country's transport network as it seeks to replace aging infrastructure with digital systems. Modernizing these components reduces human error and allows for higher train frequency and speed across the national grid.

The project focuses on the implementation of advanced interlocking systems, which control the movement and routing of trains to prevent collisions. By upgrading these legacy systems, the consortium aims to bring the network up to modern European standards. The total value of the agreement is EUR 308 million [1].

"The project will significantly improve the safety and efficiency of Romanian railways," a representative from Siemens Mobility said.

The Romanian Ministry of Transport also highlighted the scale of the project, noting that the contract represents a major investment in the nation's railway infrastructure, the ministry said.

Completion of the modernization work is targeted for July 2026 [1]. The consortium will handle the technical deployment and integration of the new signaling technology across the designated sectors of the rail network.
